In the US, Bauhaus was the path that we saw but unfortunately did not take in residential architecture. Instead we opted for sentimentality, ornament, and kitsch. Now virtually every subdivision in America is a banal and cliched assault on the senses.

Art Deco in the early 20th century reminds me that even when something "Modernist" arises as a commentary on what preceeded it, insisting that we look at fundamentls, the urge to beautify and glorify cannot be suppressed, and insists on following up with its own comment.
