I spent 8 years in postdoc limbo, moving through 5 jobs in 3 countries. Don't get a PhD expecting to go straight into a tenure - track job. Expect years of moving all your books around in cardboard boxes at your own expense.https://twitter.com/jmrphy/status/1231436280015314945 …

I got a permanent academic position one year before I got my PhD. You're making a cultural assumption.

That diagram is missing an essential component: the numbers balance doesn't add up. There's a much larger influx of PhDs than outflow to faculty positions and many end up leaving to other careers. In some way, it is a supply issue, as @EricRWeinstein has pointed out.

That's definitely true for computer science in my experience.

And you‘re telling me this is something that “intelligent people” choose to do because they think it’s a good idea?

They choose to do it because everybody in the system who SHOULD BE give them honest advice, as a mentor, is instead parroting the company line. Ph. D.’s don’t realize what is happening until they’ve past the point of no return.

My friends with Computer Science PHDs that also got professor positions had to move out of the US to get them. I kinda miss research but love my current job and the paycheck is far better. 💰

In research field the aim should not be a position, but generate knowledge and new technologies to a better world

Agree, many PhDs assume a faculty position will come. Post doc is the real hard slog, doing the equivalent of a PhD every 6 months. Being flexible about options is important. Look to industry, institutes & academia. If you get an offer in industry, take it.
