Interesting. So are there cases where it appears that there was a gender reversal in evolutionary history? In other words are there related species with stable sex determination where a homologous DNA sequence encodes for male in one but female in the other.

Sex developed in convergent evolution, similar trait evolving in different lines. In the other ways (like ZW) sex chromosome is more similar to one of our autosomal, non-sex determining, than our sex chromosomes. For example a chicken’s sex chromosome is similar our chromosome 9.
