Had you noticed this was an opinion piece the Washington Post published, not its own view. That’s what opeds are for. To put a spectrum of views into the arena for discussion. Time to calm down.
Op eds in the Culture War serve the same functions that proxy wars did during the Cold War. Plausible deniability, use of cheap disposable 'assets', & not having to respect civilized rules of engagement.

To some extent, this is also accomplished by the Obama administration with the use of anonymous government sources. Great way to float a story and disseminate misinformation without having to own up to it.
