Op eds in the Culture War serve the same functions that proxy wars did during the Cold War. Plausible deniability, use of cheap disposable 'assets', & not having to respect civilized rules of engagement.

The elites view the proper role of “democracy“ as a rubber stamp for the stuff they wanted to inflict on us anyway. When the people vote otherwise, we are told democracy is under threat.

My experience of political campaigning is that most people don't have the time or energy to engage much with politics, even on the issues they are about (usually local e.g. broken park equipment, litter, bins, etc).

In a Georgist LVT + UBI utopia, or if we started to move in that direction, perhaps people would have a greater capacity to be politically aware and engaged, with resulting benefits for democracy and the quality of elected officials.
