Great piece! I have a question. I am also from an underprivileged home, and also ended up with a postgraduate Psychology degree. Can you tell me, what do you think is the most important factor in overcoming an adverse early childhood? Luck? Will? Genes? I say Will myself.

Just try imaging a man saying the reverse. He would driven out of the public square in record time by an enraged mob. Afterwards if he applied under a fake name he maybe could get a job as a janitor. Yet causal sexism against men is not only tolerated, it’s celebrated.

Exactly, this is a beautiful example of culturally accepted misandry - particularly on the progressive left. I’m not complaining about it, it’s to be expected. I’m just saying it’s a reality we need to acknowledge.

The bourgeois write books. But their lives are so limited. It’s such a small and narrow experience. Bourgeois consumption being the very definition of a small meaningless life.

Precisely. Like Ernest Hemingway or Tolstoy. They had such a 'narrow' experience of life, as madame sips latte' at her favourite Bourgeoisie hang out. What actual thoughts run through these peoples minds?

What if we all read both? Good authors, whether men or women? Or is that a little too radical?

Writers for the Guardian have extremely limited lives. It's such a small, narrow, confined, restricted and yes, guarded experience it leads to BS columns like this.

What an absolutely ridiculous and clearly inaccurate notion. The ability to write a great book has zero to do with your experience. You’re either a good writer or a bad writer. A good storyteller or a teller of stories that are not so good. Gender does not enter into the equation
