In a partisan, polarized country, it seems easier to many people to leave a bad romantic relationship than a bad political party. Leave one mate, & you can often find another. Leave your political party, & you may need to find a whole new set of friends, neighbors, & coworkers.

This tweet finally explained to me why families always fight about politics over Christmas meals. Used to blow my mind like WTF. Thank you Geoffrey.

I think you’ll find friends from childhood will stand by you no matter what...the friends you made as an adult will find your political change of heart “problematic,” even if you’re moving but a tad right of center...nearly all those friends have shunned me...c’est la vie...

Extreme disunity. I'm exploring national service as a potential solution to the problem:https://www.perell.com/fellowship-essays/compulsory-national-service …

Imagine if you only could choose between two people to spend the rest of your life with from birth. That is essentially what we have with our two party system.

How does one leave, what one never belonged to? I don't see any political party which grants to its adherents any particular advantage of membership. How confident are we that political parties are real things? People do have very active imaginations, after all.

I've never had a political party that defined me, so it's not an experience I can relate to.

Failure to leave leads to Parties that go off the rails. Then the aftermath is less governance and more corruption.

Why can't people separate their political views from all facets of their lives? Its a disease. I know it happens regularly (its happened to me). Maybe we try "I hate speaking about politics" or "agree to disagree" and change the subject. People need to be more cordial...
