Why is there so little division of labor in many fields of psych? Same person expected to be able to develop idea, design study, run it, analyze data, write up results. And manage lab, apply for grants...Is it because being able to do everything is perceived as high prestige?>
Partially it's a legacy system of hiring, tenure, and promotion favoring 'the complete package' -- researchers who can do it all. But it's legit important for faculty mentors to understand enough about everything to train & advise grad students & post-docs effectively.
I agree with this. But until mentors get appropriate career credit for being 'partial advisors' to students, it'll be hard to develop a more effective division of labor among mentors....
