We, on the other hand, have developed a sense of responsibility for the world around us, knowing that if we had just depended on nature to feed us directly (i.e., as hunter-gatherers), we would have fully decimated nature on earth long ago.

H. erectus was spreading through Eurasia more than a million y. ago, so environmental impacts caused by human activities are nothing new. With agriculture we did encanced these impacts, but H.Gatherers were not such a saint: they deforested large areas, overhunted several preys.
