Better to say heritability "estimates the degree of variation in a phenotypic trait in a population that is due to genetic variation between individuals in that population". Imagine Bayesian predictor that assesses and incorporates assortative mating and other non-random effects.

Right. It doesnt make sense to discuss percentage contributions of genes and environment (or more accurately, non-genetic influence) to an individual’s trait score. A trait that has heritability of 80% doesnt say anything about ‘how much’ of my score on a trait is genetic
