self-control was a tenet of masculinity in my culture, in the north especially self-control was absolutely necessary to well-being for a wide variety of reasons. Self-control comes easier to some than others, but all were responsible to train yourself to do it.

this is cool to see, I have three sons and they all vary with their ability to control themselves. my first son comes to him easily, and my next two sons have a really hard time with it and we have to be really patient with them as they learn it lol.

Were the children raised by their biological parents?

It doesn’t matter, so long as twins were raised together. Twin studies compare identical twins (same genes) with non-identical twins (half the same genes) to estimate the effect due to genes versus environment.
