Here's the thing: If you _really_ want to change a typical human's mind about a long-cherished idea, you have to 1) understand why that idea feels emotionally compelling to them, & 2) help them _feel_ why your alternative idea could be even more emotionally compelling.

PS even for 'rational' people, the 'cognitive emotions' (e.g. curiosity, awe, intellectual disgust at bad arguments, gratitude for good arguments & data) are driving most 'rational' changes of heart.

I think the risk of being consigned to eternal hellfire if you misbehave somehow could be framed in a somewhat negative emotional way...

Oooh...slippery slope. Aren't we supposed to steer away from the game of emotions?

So what you’re saying is rational minds don’t exist.

For purposes of persuasion, that is a useful heuristic.

This won't work on the upper ranks who tend to be more sociopathic than the lower ranks.

What process do you use to determine these things? How do you come to understand why an idea feels compelling to someone? How do you help someone feel why your idea could be compelling?

The Double Crux Framework is a great technique for this in terms of effectiveness per word count https://www.rationality.org/resources/updates/2016/double-crux … "Unlocking the Emotional Brain" is the next level up, but more time investment https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/i9xyZBS3qzA8nFXNQ/book-summary-unlocking-the-emotional-brain …
