At least in 1984 Winston’s department of changing the past to conform to the present political needs did it in secret. This is advocation of Stalinist historical revisionism combined with the zeal of a religious revival. Notice it stated all critics are operating in bad faith.
That's been the good thing, a lot of the IRL parallels to 1984 haven't been done in secret like in the book.

Oh God, how much longer are people going to indulge/be indulged in this madness. Just when I think it's running out of steam something new crops up. Are our lives so comfortable and serene that these are the things we worry about now. 
I would oppose such a culture, but would surely enjoy endless schadenfreude from watching the cancelations nonetheless.
