TBH this is the most counter-intuitive finding I've ever seen. Tweet away to your heart's content, my brothers.https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1192081969640812544 …

Four weeks of abstention from social media had no effect on subjective well-being, calling into question their negative influence on our psyche. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15213269.2019.1688171 … pic.twitter.com/MILXj3WKLT

1/ My view of the harms of social media not likely to be picked up in this study: 1. Escapism-like videogames, some people will over-use as a coping mechanism for uncomfortable tasks and feelings. But escapism’s fungible; the escaper will just jump to the next best thing.

2/ Bullying- very bad when it happens due to the nature of online pile-ons, but also relatively rare, esp. for many people with less engagement more at risk. Chronic bullying is likely taking place IRL too, and that part unlikely to go away with less social media use.

I wonder if the impact of FOMO outweighs abstinence

Many fun/potential confounds: novelty of only 4-week abstention period; premorbid mental health conditions/concerns; social media use motives (e.g., to enhance positive affect vs. to cope with negative affect); personality traits (particularly neuroticism in big 5 model); etc.

I’m always confused about this kind of stuff, because anyone who does this anecdotally will say it was great for them, but studies of this kind seem to always say no effect. Makes me wonder about how they attempt to measure wellbeing

Probably people's natural negativity bias to anything new, similar to TV when it first came in

I suspect that people who find negativity on social media, will find negativity in any human interaction.

Perhaps the conventional wisdom is due to selection effects. That is, neurotic people both use social media more and report lower wellbeing. Both effects share a common cause. One does not cause the other.
