One thing teachers of social sciences in Mexico taught my entire generation is you can't replicate any theory or experiment because "the times change", "society is not the same as before, bro" and other greatest hits. One of the reasons we have a medieval president in office.

"Collapsing" is generous. I assume you mean politically collapsing. Intellectually blank slate was never much of a serious idea. It was a political idea. No one had to actually believe it. They simply chose expedient tribes.
