The hippies tried that. It didn't work in the free love communes, in the middle of the sexual revolution, then. And it wasn't just the women balking. People want lasting, intimate love absent of insecurity and fear. Multiple partners make that even harder than it already can be.
Polyamory is quite a bit more structured than Hippie-style 'free love' -- it may or may not share the same problem. And I've heard that some people in monogamous relationships still feel some insecurity about how long they will last....
