People think birth rates are down because children are expensive. Birth rates are down because having children is seen as low status. Subsidizing kids by law only makes that worse.

It would be interesting to see when paid maternity leave was started and how fertility rates since then has changed. Even if it does not raise the fertility rate of a country I think it is a worthwhile use of public funds.

The vast majority of men can support their families, provided that they take a hit on status of their home, vacations, eating out, etc. It's in this sense that status enters the picture, not status of having the kids. Children require sacrifice.
