People think birth rates are down because children are expensive. Birth rates are down because having children is seen as low status. Subsidizing kids by law only makes that worse.

There isn't really any research that shows paid leave supports a natalist position and some that suggests it has no effect -- particularly in Australia under the Gillard government, which was explicitly pro-natalist.

Doesn’t increase birth rates. The problem isn’t economic despite what everyone says. People used to have kids when it was high status. They don’t have them anymore when it is subsidized and low status. It’s all about status.

Paid maternity leave is a good idea. Makes it unattractive for businesses to hire women (too expensive) so women will concentrate on getting married and having kids.

That’s why it should be parental leave and allocated to both sexes. Lower any negative incentives by muddying the analysis.
