So @HobbsAndShaw is all very entertaining, but why must the utopian transhumanist utilitarians always be portrayed as the bad guys, and the reactionary paleo deontologists be portrayed as the good guys?

Utilitarianism is wrongly perceived as sociopathy.
True. That's a main barrier to widespread adoption.
My interpretation of this is it's easier to predict the behavior of someone with, as Harry Dean Stanton put it in Repo Man, "a code to live by", which would account for the cooperative partner advantage
Nicely put. Along these lines, Pinker argues that deontological morality provides moral Schelling points (https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/early/2019/06/27/1905518116.full.pdf …). It's easy to come up with complex utilitarian justifications for almost anything, but much harder to call bullshit on them.
Deontology respects individuals and the sanctity of human life and human dignity. Utilitarianism is all about killing one innocent person so that you can harvest their organs to save five other people.
