tbh, most Americans will grudgingly accept religious institutions losing tax-exempt status. They're not gonna start a civil war over it
Until Americans realize how many churches would go bankrupt. Many parish budgets are razor thin.
A lot of churches have already gone bankrupt due to declining numbers. We’d just see fewer churches, not civil unrest
It might reduce the number of churches, but churches are low-margin because they're actually a really competitive business that lots of people want to start. Being taxed as a business would probably trim some but I think the faithful will pay a bit more for the remaining ones.
Plus much of the laity would have moral reason to no longer donate to their church if the tax money is then being used to fund abortion, LGBT education, etc. It would be catastrophic.
