I think we need to parcel out committed long-term co-habitation from marriage, & both from single-parenthood. Just because people aren't getting married doesn't mean they're not in (or pursuing) de facto relationships which are basically the same https://twitter.com/WilcoxNMP/status/1182302002715463687?s=20 …

In principle, yes. But relationship research shows unmarried cohabitation has very different outcomes from marriage, and doesn't serve the same commitment functions or parenting functions.

I went back for a nursing degree after having children, and a lot of those younger women wanted to marry their partners, but the healthcare situation and benefits setup made marriage extremely cost prohibitive. Our social policies punish marriage.

There are likely other factors that influence outcomes that distribute differently among those who marry versus those who cohabitate that confound cause & effect, like vegans tending to have overall healthier lifestyles than omnivores, confounding the effect of eating meat.

Wouldn't that be culture-dependent, at least to some degree? In some cultures (e.g. Iceland and Quebec) unmarried cohabitation is the norm.

Except when it sometimes does, regardless of group trend. Thus, the only accurate answer to the "needed" question must be no. Should've asked something like "does marriage make families stronger" instead; different question to get at the conclusion y'all are looking for.

It depends on cultural context. Look at ‘sambo’ (cohabitation) relationships in Scandinavia before assuming that there’s something inherently special about marriage.

Unless those sampled are in Scandinavia (and talking about it), your point may be both valid and irrelevant.
