#AcademicTwitter IMO "junior" faculty is dismissive-like we're *too inexperienced* to conduct powerful research, get those grants, or be extraordinary teachers. I've literally been told (in a job interview), "you're too young to be a leader".

The whole academic career terminology needs to be overhauled. It's incredibly confusing to non-academics that you go from 'post-doc' to 'junior faculty', and nobody outside academia seems to know the difference between 'assistant prof' and 'adjunct prof'....

What is also pretty extraordinary to non- academics is the concept of ‘tenure’, a job status which apparently means it is almost impossible to get fired, irrespective of performance and often funded by taxpayers. Let’s put that concept to a vote

That really isn’t the effect of tenure. Tenure effectively just means the end of the seven year probation; you get to keep your job.
