Bay Area housing: not enough of it; insanely expensive. Rancho Corral de Tierra along Highway 280: colossal amount of land, the size of San Francisco, could house millions. Still undeveloped. Why?

Do people 'need' more land? Well if the median house price in SF is $1.7 million, and nurses, cops, firemen, teachers, etc can't afford to live in a city and raise kids, then yes, people need the land.

This reminds me: as buildings get taller at what point in height does the cost per square foot go up? Would much denser housing in SF be more expensive to construct? There are some economies of scale. But how does it work in housing size?

If people were not willing to pay that much for housing, then prices would fall. But since people put status over sustainability, I guess you are right.

The house on that property will not be cheaper. Trust me on this.

There are hundreds of cities more densely.populated thsn San Francisco - maybe needing more land is not the only issue? It is one of them, though

My understanding is that a large part of the expense in San Francisco is all the regulatory hoops builders have to jump through to get approval though to redevelop what is already there. Also, urban sprawl presents its own issues that lead to similar results.

In Marin County (just north of SF), teachers, firemen, grocery store people were commuting from 60+ miles away.
