The West, lead by the US, is basically a naval power. We grant access to the open sea regarding Russia. In the event of war, the West controls the Bosporus straits, the Gibraltar straits, Suez Canal, and the North Sea (defended bush the UK). We control the world’s oceans.

The history of Turkey and Russia is a long one, with a series of conflicts along religious and empire lines. The US naturally exploited that when it suited us to contain the Soviets. The Turks, with a wary eye on Russia were happy to oblige. Not so much now.
