Intriguing thread on how Costco really makes its money. Tl;dr: exploit suppliers & charge membership fees.https://twitter.com/investing_city/status/1179974257779982336 …

Costco is a fascinating business. You know all those groceries you buy? Yeah, they basically sell those at breakeven and then make all of their profit from the $60 annual membership fees. Quick [THREAD]

“Exploit” seems loaded for a system that benefits consumers

Exploit is wrong everyone there time free will is in the process. Let leftists use it randomly to mean that the party they'd like to win 0 sum games, loses.

Exploit? Meh. Suppliers agree to the terms, and fight tooth and nail to gain slots in their stores.

Different take. They pay their employees almost double the going rate for their skill level and save Americans billions per year by keeping prices low. Suppliers voluntarily enter into mutually beneficial high volume deals. Oh, and their CEO gets lower pay than other comp CEOs

I think more businesses should charge membership. Bookshops could give amazon prices but for a £50 annual friends of the shop fee. I’d join.

Exploit suppliers? Clearly you have no expertise in this area

Lol "exploit" . Suppliers still make money selling to costco or they wouldn't sell to costco.

Costco supplier here. I promise we are not exploited lol. They mark up 15% max. Our limitation with them is the perishability of our product and the fact they do not have many stores compared to the rest of our portfolio. Would love to expand with them tho.
