Perfect example of what happens when journalists have zero understanding of behavior genetics. News flash: we've known for decades that interest in reading is heritable, and genetically correlated with the main traits mentioned here.https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2019/09/love-reading-books-leisure-pleasure/598315/ …

The depth of the nurture assumption is sometimes astounding

Great point! My husband and are avid readers and adoptive parents. We read to our son since infancy, but he loathes reading. Pinker’s Blank Slate prepared for me for this thankfully.

It’s scary how little people know about the heritability of behavior. I know a lot more than your average person and even I’m amazed and surprised at its correlates.

Kudos to whoever at the Atlantic chose the photo for this piece.

I have quasi-counter anecdata! My daughter's biomom (my cousin) has never been a big reader. Our grandpa was, as was/is my mom, as was/am I. I became daughter's foster mom when she was almost four. She quickly came to love books & was reading Harry Potter on her own by 8. Fwiw

I started reading nonfiction in my 20s, I'm not sure if I was ever interested when I was younger but my mum never encouraged it. I enjoy reading but I geuss I'm not great at taking everything in. Am I doomed?

As a general rule of thumb it’s best to just avoid reading @TheAtlantic altogether
