A researcher spends ~116 hrs applying for each federal grant. Do grant applications need to be so long? If I were head of NSF/NIH I'd try a pilot w/applications that take only ~8 hrs, then see if the research it funds turns out any less valuable than normal. Has that been tried?

Kind of. I’m going to try a back up plan just because getting a grant is a hell of a process, understandably. Any recommendations for a non academic seeking a grant? No credentials at the time either.

No credentials, non-academic - is there a good reason to think that the work is valuable to someone, and not being done otherwise? If so, pitch to whoever it is valuable to, and get them to help.
