They count for very little in promotion and tenure, and few people ever read 95% of them.

I disagree with the spirit of this advice bcos of its underlying individualistic/ungenerous ethos. 1) writing for edited volumes puts you in coversation/context with others 2) collaborations have no *departmental* boundaries 3) yes to reading deeply/broadly, but to *understand*
