Language or violence. Diplomacy or war. If you reduce the ability of heads of state to talk to each other candidly, for fear of conversations being made public later, you inhibit language. You inhibit diplomacy. You increase the risk of war. Is that really what we want?

If either Kennedy or Kruschev had made quid-pro-quo statements asking for favors intended to benefit them politically, those calls certainly might've (and probably would've) been released, and rightly so.

Information travels MUCH faster now then it did then. But, I'll modify my position to say that the calls never seeing the light of day works for me in a world where we can believe without a shadow of a doubt that the President is working in the country's best interest.
