I love a lot of your views, but even as a thought experiment this is a silly question. The President can absolutely speak to other world leaders candidly, he just can't commit crimes whilst doing so. It seems pretty easy.
Honestly, I think it's a better check on what conversations are taking place to have them conducted as though they may be released later on versus allow (potential) crimes to be committed because the President knows the calls will never see the light of day.
