The best anti-depressants have to do with having meaningful work, meaningful relationships, physical and financial stability, and hope for the future. As well as not having serious psychological issues from poorly dealt with or overwhelming trauma.

Physical exercise, behavioral activation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Unfortunately, all involve initiative, which is one of the first things depression robs from a person. Cost ranges from free to cheap though. SSRIs can kickstart people, but miserable long-term strategy.

They have been over-prescribed, as antibiotics once were. It's a kind of hammer-and-nail approach. Antidepressants have their place, but they are not a cure-all.

Antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria are a a different beast. I think SSRIs are closer to paracetamol in that they’re not very good, but people still overuse them. They get the green light because they don’t have much black market appeal.
