Proposal: 1. Autonomous machines must record interactions and automatically report for (possible) decommissioning when humans injured/killed. 2. Extreme penalties for anyone who attempts to circumvent #1. 3. Individuals are accountable for crimes committed by AIs they program.https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/1176497063116324865 …

Problem with #3 is that AI teams will be dozens of people with diffusion of responsibility. Jail them all if their AI kills someone? Sounds hard to prosecute...

Hence my point about "broad brush". But we do this job with something like a plane crash. Same principle. And it is vital that individuals involved know that the remove does not insulate them from responsibility.

As a coder, I can tell you that #3 is problematic, partly because software is an aggregation of code written by many people over the years (ppl come and go) and also 3rd party libraries (some open source). Finger pointing at a specific developer isn’t always practical.

Presumably they work for a company which could be prosecuted, fined or have their charter revoked.

The individuals, not the company, should be prosecuted. Otherwise, the bad actors will just start another company.

From my casual discussions with my friends who are physical engineers, it seems like that why you may have a PE on an engineering team. They are qualified for a decision on the life safety quality of a system. They bear the culpability for their determination.

The robot half of this doesn't make me as nervous as the AI half. What about when AI is capable of modifying/improving its own code? That's the real inflection point, right?

Preventing that should be baked into the design.
