This captures the problem well. “Standing the ground for truth and honesty” presupposes that you know the truth and that those who disagree are being dishonest (or willfully stupid). It’s not analytical, it’s dogmatic and ideological. With New Atheism, it carried a high price.https://twitter.com/BilboMichal/status/1174502933800587265 …

New Atheism for me is simply atheism + having courage to stand the ground for truth and honesty on this topic. I have no idea what @BretWeinstein is talking about either.

I was onboard with 'New Atheism' until 1) I understood the Simulation Hypothesis 2) I learned more about cultural group selection & adaptive functions of religion 3) I saw some leading New Atheists show the same kind of arrogance about other political issues (e.g. Brexit)...

What’s the link between the Simulation Hypothesis and New Atheism? 🤔

Simulation hypothesis suggests there may be Simulators behind the curtain -- one, or many, or an unknown system of intention and advanced technology.... It's hard to remain a 100% confident Atheist if you really understand the Simulation Hypothesis.

If life is simulated by the ‘original’ people, then these original people with their enormous computing powers should still exist somewhere. Swiping the simulated with the simulators does not challenge the atheist hypothesis, it only shifts the burden.

I don't think the Simulation argument has much relevance to theism as being unable to presuppose higher agents'/The Simulators' goals is different from calling the comprehension of such goals epistemically unfeasible from the get go.

And I'd probably be happier if it were true, even if I somewhat doubt it - would mean at least one universe has available computational capacity to 'split infinitely' from a subjective perspective. A world with potentially infinite subjective time is a happy place.
