They're not as smart and ingenuous like the corvids, but they are pretty responsive and aware of their environment.

Having kept chickens for many years, I can safely say that with a few exceptions it is nearly impossible to underestimate the cognitive ability of chickens. Fortunately for mine, I don't believe intelligence per se should be why one takes care of an animal's welfare.
