Given the way chickens are farmed, it seems plausible that it wouldn't be particularly difficult to genetically engineer nearly mindless chickens to serve the same purpose. People's fear of genetic engineering is, if anything, more irrational than their fear of radiation.
If that's easier, it's certainly preferable. IF it were completely deregulated (and I'm not necessarily advocating for this) I believe several varieties of ground meats would become price competitive and a superior product in a scary short amount of time.
