Seems like you are anthropomorphizing a chicken's suffering a little too much. If a cage is all a chicken knows, why do you assume it's suffering? All you can do is think about what you would feel in that situation. But you are not a chicken and chicken is not you
There's research on their suffering. That's how we know.
What we know is limited. No way around it. And it would help if this sort of research were conducted by organizations that don't already believe in what the answer should be
We know that cages differ tremendously from native habitat. We also know that chickens can (1) experience pain and discomfort, and (2) comprehend the negative consequences of pain and discomfort to the well being of the chicken. Sentience exists in non humans.
