Department stores are excellent at discovery but lousy at search based shopping. All online retailers excellent at search shopping and awful at discovery. Both are hard problems but it’s striking how little progress either has made in 15 years and billions of dollars spent.
Thrift stores are incredibly efficient for search-based clothes shopping. Almost always organized by sex, then clothing type, then clothing size, then color. (And they usually have the same distribution of brands as department stores.)
