While most 20-somethings don't know better, many writing this stuff do. Tropes, however cynically served up, pay. Audience are reassured they have life figured out; TV is just life turned up to 11, to be viewed ironically because no one's life is *that* "real".

Characters are irretrievably stupid or impossibly smart -- so you neither need worry you're the former, nor try to be the latter. Attempts at compromise, rarely seen, never go unpunished. "That's right", says TV, "You get it your way, except when the bad people won't let you."

I think I was 28 or so when I was completely over it, just as you say. And I'm almost 44 now. No change.

I absolutely cannot be bothered with imaginary people and their imaginary problems anymore. Not just on TV, but books as well. Classics and biographies/non-fiction are the only thing I've been able to read these last 2-3 years.

Agreed, it comes on quicker for some than others. I suppose a correlation could be posited there as well.
