Should admission to academic institutions be based purely on academic merit (ability & achievement)?

For public schools*, yes. Private schools should be able to do as they please. *non-athletes applying to public schools. Athletes with offers are different imo

I’m fully comfortable answering “I don’t know” to that question. I believe academic meritocracy is the best system, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way. I like the idea of private schools being able to implement policies as they see fit and observing their outcomes

Promoting diversity increases chances of new unexpected outcomes. By this I do not intend to lower the bar for all students but rather leave some room for a number of out of the box cases.

This is the reason why universities in Brazil for instance welcome as many foreign researches as they can afford.
