He who is only an athlete is too crude, too vulgar, too much a savage. He who is a scholar only is too soft, too effeminate. The ideal citizen is the scholar athlete, the man of thought and the man of action. Plato.

Yes, but how effective are professionalized NCAA college sports at getting the other 98% of students to turn themselves into this scholar-athlete ideal?

What if playing on a college sports team improves a student's human capital more than taking classes does?
-
Then require every student to play on an intramural team, like MIT used to. Not just 2% of students.

This is delusional. Sports (for state schools) are the main source of advertisement and ‘prestige’. Maybe it’s more of a focus for Ivys (probably still mostly chasing down grants like Jack Lemon chasing leads in Glengarry Glen Ross)
-
So we've been told to think. I'd like to see some data on whether all this alleged 'prestige' brings any real benefits to these universities; so far, they refuse to give any credible numbers.

- End sports (that add to student's tuition) - End school scholarships - End legacy - End affirmative action and sympathetic "corrective" admissions - Gut bloated admins and schools adding 30 to 50 credits of superfluous classes for "human capital" (and indoctrination) ...
-
...after all that's done. - open the schools to public money and revisit our workforce increasing demands for higher ed for entry level positions.

You presume that a university’s core mission is to produce scholars. Really doesn’t seem to be the main priority.

Ending legacy admits at private schools strikes me as utopian and foolish. Why shouldn't a private educational institution give some preference to the offspring of previous grads, especially generous ones? It fosters tradition and a family vibe, and it brings in needed funds.
-
I'd rather be around students who actually earned their spot instead of just having the right parents.
