I'm mixed on this. On one hand yes, it seems like a core doctrine, but on the other hand a lot of really essential things around the soul are often discarded - like going to hell, or being sinful, or even what it takes to go to heaven at all.

Sure, but most Western Christians don’t really believe in their religion that strongly anymore. It’s more of a loose and declining cultural identity. Ignorance of core religious tenets is the norm, not the exception, sadly.
