I'm on board the 'cultural christian' idea. For most people, 'Christian' is a basic community identifier and isn't that strongly tied to actual theological/spiritual beliefs.

I'm just surprised that when it comes to the highest-stakes issue in a Christian's life -- the salvation of their soul -- they're confused about whether their soul goes to Heaven or gets put back in another body.

Why? I don’t see an inconsistency. (May be inconsistent with your belief, but how is it inconsistent with scripture and/or doctrine?)

American Christianity ain't what it used to be.

Reincarnation was a doctrine of early Christianity. Nixed by Constantine because the removal of this belief made the population more easily controllable. Metaphysically it makes sense.

What standard Christian doctrine is it incompatible with? Certain Gnostic sects endorsed it, and there are passages in the Bible that seem to warrant belief in reincarnation (e.g. when Peter suggests that Jesus might actually be a reincarnation of Elijah).
