I support the total destruction of the current college cartel. Let's start with: - No govt student loan guarantees - Student loans should be dischargeable in bankruptcy like any other debt - Sue colleges for fraud re: their garbage degrees - Tax the endowments Burn it down.

The test prep companies would love this.

Test prep is a lot less expensive than college.

Yes!!! I was just saying this to my coworker. Why don't companies make tests tailored to the skills and reasoning they want and need? Getting a degree (outside of STEM) just means you put in the time and almost nothing else. It's ridiculous for businesses to require a degree.
-
Agree. This already kinda exists in the form of certifications for certain fields. I had to get a number of certifications to get into finance. It took about 4 months, I learned more and was better prepared after that than after 4 years of college. Much cheaper too.

I don’t think intelligence is the most important dimension for most employers and the current system serves them well. Candidates pay for their own training and if they take on debt to get it are more like to perform the job reliably for a longer period (need the $)

Most employers want compliance. A college degree has never been a better signal of that than now.

This is what many tech companies do with coding quizzes that include brain teasers. The goal is to find the handful of smart people in the ocean of mediocrity. My first employer (summer job) gave me a rapid fire math quiz: "What's 5 divided by 1/8. What's the sin of pi"

That type of quiz would also place those with fast processing times ahead of those who may be more capable but slower. Malcolm Gladwell had a great podcast on this issue:http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/32-the-tortoise-and-the-hare …

I agree but I also feel like (elite) companies already test for intelligence with protracted multi stage interviews, coding/brain teaser interviews, take-homes, etc.
