    Geoffrey Miller Retweeted Anna Khachiyan

A great tweet about Lana del Rey that's both deeply true and deeply misguided. Every great culture has always been a mishmash of nostalgic simulations of former cultures. Examples: the Renaissance. Neoclassicism. Pre-Raphaelites. Postmodernism.https://twitter.com/annakhachiyan/status/1168687603241095168 …

    Geoffrey Miller added,

    Anna Khachiyan @annakhachiyan
I love Lana more than any other pop star today but Paglia is right that the people who are attracted to her aesthetic and moved by her lyrics are neurasthenic, slightly dead-inside solipsists who are self-aware enough to know that they live in a nostalgic simulation of culture

You're not calling Postmodernism a great culture, I hope.

It was for a minute, in the 80s. But maybe I'm just nostalgic....

I encourage you to read Mark Fisher, especially Capitalist Realism. The difference is that our culture is no longer producing new cultural modes so it’s no longer nostalgia for a past culture so much as nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.

The continuity of older cultures with modernity is pretty much the main theme of Paglia’s work

My question is: where did Greek culture come from? Or, did they just make up 90% of their stories and run wild with them.

I'll freely admit my ignorance about this, but how is postmodernism nostalgic?
