Key word, "exclusive"? Perhaps the evolutionary play is have a few kids in your teens then align yourself with powerful men to keep them well fed and, as a bonus, increase the fitness of your clan by improving solidarity?

Interesting idea, but what's in it, evolutionarily, for the powerful men?

Are there any somewhat reasonable/recent/undergrad-reading-level articles on this topic? I'm teaching Psychology of Reproduction next semester & *know* I'll get this question.
-
Yes, here is a recent and very accessible summary of the topic: https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007%2F978-3-319-16999-6_3403-1 … David Buss also has a section on it in his Evolutionary Psychology textbook.

Isn't male homosexuality more common in second sons from the same mother? Maybe it's a mechanism to reduce sexual competition as the population increases.

I think that's a myth.

Ive pondered this just as a thinking exercise and something I thought about is it could be natures way of ending bad genetic lines. That's really the only thing I can think of that makes sense. If not maybe it could have to do with some hormonal imbalance during pregnancy.

The problem is that all things are moderately heritable. Even if homosexuality was purely cultural, you would still see some genetic correlations.
