Backstory: when I chose to do a PhD instead of MD (in 1987), NSF was projecting huge growth in faculty hiring in the 90s. Later they revealed that their projection models were flawed & wildly over-optimistic, but they took no responsibility for misdirecting student's decisions.

Sometimes. But not usually; the health care system also proved to be a mess.

My graduate advisor warned me about the glut in PhDs, so I decided to get my master’s. That was in 1994. We need a lot more medical schools and PA programs.
In 1975, I fled Academia for an MBA. All the tenured positions in my field (physical anthropology) were held by people (mostly men, then) on average 10 yrs older than me, beneficiaries of the demographics. Even I could count on my fingers that opportunities were limited at best.
Not only was NSF's choice unethical, it moves us closer to a radical downsizing in higher ed. We've got a vast oversupply of a good that in many cases not only doesn't prepare students (depending on field) for life, but actually leaves them worse off. Totally Unsustainable!

Seems like that should be actionable fraud. If a company deliberately misleads their customers and that causes those customers to lose massive amounts of time and money then they should be legally liable for a tortious act.
Yeah, I got caught in that web as well. I didn't help myself by doing a humanities PhD dissertation titled Evolutionary Aesthetics that used Evolutionary psychology, sociobiology, and Austrian economics.
Being in a PhD program is low risk, guaranteed pay, and a great way to find allies and mates. I dropped out of a top PhD program and now my life is great. We overstate the downsides of being subsidized on a great campus as a young person surrounded by people you want to marry.
