If you’re about to start college, remember this: - College will be there waiting for you in a year. Or two. The economy is booming. Make that cash. Stash the cash. When market tanks, then go to college “rich,” and old enough to buy liquor.

Military or ex-military seem to do well, too.

Thoughts on compulsory national service for 1-2 years directly out of high school? Has (at least) 3 benefits: 1. Helps get things done for the country. 2. Builds a sense of national unity. 3. Gives young adults time to mature before college. I'm still thinking it through...

Compulsory national service would be a form of gov't enforced involuntary servitude. Not a fan. Optional though? Good idea.

I'd be interested in an analysis of minor league baseball players who don't make the big time: who is better off at age 40: those who joined minors out of high school or out of college. Billy Beane regrets turning down Stanford football scholarship for minor league baseball.

"I don't know what my goal is, so I think I'll just borrow $100,000 with no plan to pay it back and meander through majors that are topically interesting for 5 years figuring it out while honing my beer pong skills."

I went straight out of HS & dropped out after the first year. But I didn’t get much support from home. So, 20 years later I returned; having 3 kids, I got my bachelors degree, got a job, went back to college and earned my masters. At 18 I wanted to party. At 40, I wanted all A’s!

Given my life path I’m incredibly primed to agree with this so maybe it’s bias (or plural of anecdote != data) but I think this is very true. Gap students also likely better at matching education with career aspirations (or return for time/$ invested).
