Gelernter is brilliant in computer science, but he doesn't understand evolutionary biology even to the level of a first year grad student. Sad.

If somebody is going to mount a challenge to one of the most successful theories in the history of science, then they better bring some impressive artillery. This isn't that.

So he left Darwinism because of: 1. The lack of pre-Cambrian fossils, despite all the other fossils we do have. 2. Incorrectly calculated probabilities about protein folding. 3. He wrongly believes that "There are no examples of mutations that are not fatal."

What the heck is darwinism? A philosophy? It's called theory of evolution. Also pointing out to the lack of fossil record is... childish. Fossils are a miracle of nature and only a tiny percentage of organisms fossilised at certain conditions. To find one is a second miracle.

I stopped reading when he claimed that gaps in the fossil record is a problem. It's only a problem if you assume creationist talking points. fossilization is actually a rare occurrence, more rare than creationists assume. succession in the fossil record matters more than gaps

Not a creationist, but isn't the basic objection that Darwin did a great job explaining adaptation but did not answer the fundamental question of origin? Perhaps the title of his classic "On the Origin of Species" claimed more than it delivered?
