Isn't there an asymmetry between using an abstract theory positively and negatively (for falsification)? Presumably abstract math is still good for disproving things, while being unreliable in the open world.

Taleb's whole point is that the assumptions upon which the methods used to analyze these data are tenuous at best. Like him or not, he's mostly right.
