What do you think about comments like “Let’s be supportive of each other in this small community of people who study X - let’s not go too hard on each other in peer review”?
How can a small field grow to become a big field if it doesn't maintain stellar quality from the outset, to attract the best and brightest?

I wish size correlated with quality but I don’t see many examples of this being true

I think climate science is a perfect example of a large field populated by low level hacks. Journalism and Education are also fields with low academic and research standards. All ‘X’-studies fields are good examples.

Because not every field needs to be the biggest, strongest and best just to grow bigger. Doing things "just well" should be more than sufficient to be on the positive balance!
